The toll that asbestos and asbestos-related illnesses like Mesothelioma can take on the human body and on families is well documented. Mesothelioma is one of the most virulent forms of cancer in the world, and dozens of other debilitating illnesses are tied to exposure to asbestos fibers, but we often forget the incredible toll that asbestos and other toxins can take on a neighborhood or an entire community.
The San Francisco Bay area is easily one of the most beautiful places in the world to live, but a pair of recent news items has shed a harsh light on exactly what asbestos is capable of when it comes to destroying the liveability of an area. If you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos or if you are currently suffering from an asbestos-related illness, contact a legal professional today to see if you are entitled to a cash award.
Federal Stimulus Money Helps Clear Building with Asbestos in San Francisco
The first news item, appearing in the May 10, 2009, issue of the San Francisco Chronicle examined the role that federal stimulus funds are playing in revitalizing once proud buildings that have been rendered useless due to the presence of asbestos and other deadly toxins. In San Francisco, the Federal Office Building in U.N. Plaza was once a showpiece of which the entire city was proud. The building was a hive of activity all day long, and it was even a minor tourist attraction many years ago.

Today, the building sits empty, and the now-dilapidated U.N. Plaza is more of an eyesore than a tourist attraction. The reason is because it would cost more to demolish it and deal with the asbestos fibers than to simply let it stand. Thanks to federal stimulus money, the entire area has been given a new lease on life, and one less building in the Bay Area is full of deadly asbestos.
San Quentin Prison Plagued by Toxic Materials
The Federal Building isn’t alone. Famed San Quentin Prison is actually up for sale, but developers are casting a leary eye on the prime location. You know a piece of property has to be in pretty bad shape for San Francisco-area developers to be scared off. In this case, the prison has been described as a “toxic waste dump” by Marin County Supervisor Gary Giacomini. The reported cost of simply cleaning up the site so that it could be used for any other reason is said to be astronomical. Again, this is a viable piece of land in a place where workable land is scarce, and not even the most ambitious developers want to touch it.
If you think that you have been exposed to asbestos, or if you feel that you or someone you love is ill due to asbestos exposure, you may be eligible for a cash award. Contact a local asbestos lawyer today to learn more about what you are entitled to.
