San Antonio is still, for the most part, the hidden gem of the state of Texas. Most folks have heard of Houston and Dallas, but fewer have heard of and visited San Antonio. The city offers the best of both worlds: the amenities you come to expect from a big city while still retaining that small town friendliness that everyone in Texas loves. However, San Antonio has also been one of the primary battlegrounds when it comes to asbestos.

Thousands of cases have cropped up here over the years and are still being found to this day. If you live in San Antonio and you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos, you have the right to take legal action.

Illegal Asbestos Removal in San Antonio Puts Children at Risk

Asbestos contamination is tragic enough when it happens in a work place. We are all adults, and although asbestos contamination usually happens through no fault of our own, at least we can understand the circumstances and deal with the results appropriately. When contamination happens to children, the results are particularly senseless.

An article that appeared on the website MySanAntonio.com on May 20, 2009, revealed, “An Environmental Protection Agency investigation found that San Antonio Independent School District did not comply with federal rules when it had workers remove asbestos-containing floor tiles at an elementary school last May.” The article says further, “The agency sent a letter of ‘noncompliance’ to SAISD this month, citing the district because it did not have trained professionals remove the tiles in bathrooms at W.W. White Elementary School.

The school also did not have on hand a required asbestos management plan, which identifies where the hazardous material is on campus and how it should be handled.” Those with a student in this school have every right to be furious. If you believe that your student or anyone in your family was exposed to asbestos fibers that they may have inhaled, you have the right to speak to an attorney to see if you are entitled to a cash settlement.

San Antonio Must be Vigilant on Asbestos Removal

The story above is especially surprising when you consider San Antonio was ahead of the curve when it came to implementing regulations that looked to freeze out those folks performing illegal asbestos removals. According to a January 2001 article that appeared in the Austin-American Statesman, “San Antonio's asbestos consultants and contractors are a lot busier than they used to be. That’s just part of the evidence that an 18-month-old city law is slashing the number of illegal asbestos removals.”

The article also says, “The city won’t issue permits for the renovation or demolition of commercial buildings unless, with a few exceptions, the owners prove they’ve complied with state and federal law by having a licensed consultant survey for asbestos.” Apparently, even the most failsafe plan needs a little extra work. If you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos and are now experiencing health issues related to that exposure, consider contacting a legal professional today.
