Asbestos And Cancer

Asbestos is a natural product. It is a silicate mineral. In appearance, asbestos is long and fibrous. It may be long and straight (Amphibole asbestos) or long and curly (Serpentine asbestos). In either form is considered toxic. Experts believe there is a direct co-relation between asbestos and cancer. Individuals who work with asbestos are more prone to get specific types of cancer than the general population. This includes lung cancer. Asbestos and cancer are also linked to increased levels of cancer in asbestos workers and their families. There is also a specific type of cancer that occurs almost exclusively in those individuals exposed to asbestos. This is mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is cancer that occurs when asbestos invades the lung and chest lining (pleura) or the lining of the abdominal walls (peritoneum). The disease progresses outwards from the lining of the lungs or abdominal walls. Mesothelioma is almost always fatal. Since 1968 and 2006 a series of discoveries on the relationship between asbestos and cancer as well as improper mining practices have resulted in lawsuits being filed against mining corporations.
