Asbestos Bill

In 2007, the Asbestos Bill by US Senator Patty Murray won bipartisan favor and passed unanimously. The problem is, it never made it any further. Despite the fact that the Bill was proposed in congress for two years, it never passed. Since bills that aren't passed are cleared from the books, that means it must be reintroduced to congress. Thousands upon thousands of people die each year from Mesothelioma, which can be caused by asbestos but congress has not found the time nor the ambition to consider the bill. Known as S 742, the bill puts tight restrictions on the use and working with asbestos. The bill also goes so far as to direct the CDC and other agencies to work to find out more non-invasive ways of dealing with Mesothelioma. It is obvious a great deal of thought went into this bill and it makes one wonder why congress is avoiding it? There is still asbestos material in production although demand declined sharply after 1978. Asbestos materials are still being made for countries outside of North America. In fact, asbestos is still in wide spread use in some countries. The Asbestos bill seems to have hit a brick wall in congress. It may take the voice of the people to get them moving.
