Asbestos Diseases

Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate mineral. It is mined in several countries around the world. Two of the largest producers are Russia and Canada. It has been prized for its thermal insulation properties. Asbestos is also a known carcinogen. All asbestos fibers are considered toxic. This mineral is responsible for several different types of asbestos diseases. The most common of these is mesothelioma. This is a cancer affecting the pleura (lining of the lungs or chest cavity. The cancer may also attack the peritoneum. This is the lining of the abdominal wall. Other kinds of asbestos diseases include asbestosis. This is a non-cancerous condition. It happens when asbestos enters the lungs. In defence, the body creates protective scar tissue. This cuts down on lung capacity producing heart problems and, eventually, death. Asbestos diseases are usually progressive. They may produce clubbed fingers or result in emphysema or pleural plaques. Asbestos diseases have resulted in numerous litigations. Until the substance is banned completely will asbestos diseases continue to appear. Moreover, since the disease has a lag period, justifiable lawsuits based on the impact of asbestos diseases will continue into the future.
