Asbestos identification is needed for anyone who plans to remodel or reconstruct their homes (or businesses) and need to know just what to look for. With the growing number of health concerns over asbestos and Mesothelioma, knowing what to look for and what to do if you find it can be very important to your health. The safest thing to do would be to hire a contractor to come in and check for asbestos. It is possible for the homeowner to check themselves but they would need to be armed with a complete list of asbestos containing materials. Those lists are available online. It is sometimes very difficult to tell the difference between a material containing asbestos and one that does not contain asbestos. One of the easiest asbestos materials to spot is pipe insulation. With asbestos insulations, under the paper like wrap there is a cement like material instead of fiberglass. Siding can sometimes be spotted as well. Asbestos siding is ridged and is almost always white. It was used from about 1920-1960 and was a mixture of asbestos and cement. If you look at some of the older houses still around today, you can see that many still have the asbestos mix siding.
