Exposure to asbestos results in several serious medical conditions. These include mesothelioma and asbestosis. Mesothelioma is a fatal cancer. It is found almost exclusively among individuals who have been exposed to asbestos at high levels. It is the result of the asbestos fibers gaining entry through the airwaves and into the lining of the pleura (chest and lung cavity) or the peritoneum (lining of the abdominal wall). The disease then spreads outwards, invading the body. It is almost always fatal. Asbestos treatment in the case of mesothelioma is expensive. There are several options. Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy may help arrest the development of the cancer. Asbestosis is a non-cancerous form of asbestos-related illnesses. With asbestosis, asbestos treatment may range from actual removal of segments of the lung or even a lung transplant to the draining of fluid from the lung to aerosol medications and antibiotics. Asbestosis is not curable. The amount of medical expenses result in many individuals taking part in a lawsuit. Such a litigation may help recoup medical costs and lost wages.
