Selikoff Asbestos

Dr. Irving Selikoff is recognized as the foremost researcher on asbestos related illness. Dr. Selikoff established a link between the inhalation of asbestos products and lung ailments in the 1960's. Selikoff's asbestos research is credited with pressuring OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) to limit and regulate workplace exposure to asbestos. Dr. Selikoff's findings were somewhat inadvertent. He practiced general medicine in the 1950's in New Jersey and became a favorite doctor among members of the Asbestos Workers Union. Within just a few years, he noticed that the incidence of mesothelioma among his patients was significantly higher than the average of 5 in 100,000. This led Selikoff to begin research on the relationship between asbestos workers and lung related illnesses. For many years, Selikoff was director of the Environmental and Occupational Health Division of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Dr. Selikoff, along with a coworker, discovered the cure for tuberculosis.
