White asbestos is also referred to as chrysotile asbestos. It is the most controversial of the naturally occurring fibers known as asbestos. The use of chrysotile as a fire retardant and insulator continues to cause debate. It is currently used in the manufacture of chrysotile-cement. It is employed in the construction industry in North America in the form of pipes, sheets and shingles. These products are used in some 60 industrialized and developing countries. Two producers of white asbestos are Canada and South Africa. In fact, Canada produces about 22% of the entire world's supply of chrysotile asbestos. This country exports it mainly to Japan, Thailand and Korea. White asbestos has been linked with asbestosis and mesothelioma. Lung cancer can be caused by exposure to chrysotile asbestos. Arguments for the continued use of chrysotile argue that the incidence of such asbestos-related diseases is lower for white asbestos.
