Asbestos has long been rightly accused for the condition Mesothelioma – a cancer of the protective lining of the organs in our bodies.  Most of the time, individuals are exposed to Asbestos at work.  While this is a very dangerous substance to be exposed to, there are others that individuals should be aware of as well.  Below, you will learn about some of those dangerous substances and why they’re so dangerous.

Benzene

Benzene is an organic chemical compound and known carcinogen that is used in the production of many things, including polymers and plastics.  It is also often used in small amounts for certain rubbers, dyes, insecticides and paints or varnishes.  Benzene is extremely dangerous to those who are exposed to it.  Not only does it cause leukemia, but targets the major organs of the body – damaging those and even breaking DNA strands.  Benzene can damage bone marrow and is responsible for a rare kidney cancer affecting those who have been exposed to it.

Beryllium

Beryllium is a chemical element which is often used in the space and defense weapon fields as well as some electrical applications.  It is also used as a hardening agent in some metals.  Typically, those who are exposed to Beryllium are exposed to the chemical in the form of a dust.  This dust is extremely damaging to the lungs and can lead to the development of cancer.

Lead

Lead is a heavy metal which is used in the making of bullets, batteries, some paints and other items.  However, the use of lead in household objects has been limited in most places in the US due to the health problems which occur.  Lead collects in the bones and tissues over time – and can lead to some serious health problems, including death.  Most individuals who are exposed to lead are exposed at work, however many are exposed when using or handling the household items containing lead.  Many cases of lead poisoning have been traced back to wall paint and paint on toys.

Manganese

Another chemical element, Manganese is a type of metal.  It is most often used in the making of steel and those who are exposed are typically exposed at work.  Typically, it’s the dust which causes the problems and can cause impaired motor skills and many other problems.  In fact, one type of Parkinson’s Disease has been traced back to Manganese poisoning in miners and smelters.

Although Asbestos is one of the most commonly known chemicals that individuals have been exposed to in their jobs, there are many others.  The four above are some of the most dangerous chemicals and metals that individuals continue to be exposed to.
